Motor carriage 181

ln the second half of 1937, the Antwerpsche Tramwegen began modernising their railcars. This mainly involved extending the balconies and fitting pneumatic doors. Some were also given air brakes. 133 wagons were rebuilt and given a new series number. These were series 201-230, 251-370 and 401-471. The prototype 101 (ex-450) left the workshop on 15 January 1938. The last wagon, the 233, on 15 January 1946.
From 1952, the first modernised carriages were removed for scrapping. Some trams continued their careers as 'tractors' in the road and works service or as 'depanneurs' in the depot. Depanneur 5851 (ex-405/ex-181) went to De Lijn's Hoboken workshop in February 1992. There it was restored as tram 181 with receiver seating (condition 1952).
